Pierpaolo Piccioli was surprised to find that his 15-year-old daughter had raided his wardrobe for a night out with her friends when he returned home from his work at the Valentino office in Rome. She had taken one of his black suits, a white shirt, and a black tie, and was ready to leave. Piccioli was amazed because he had never worn a suit to work, except for special events like the Met Ball, where he wears one with a bow tie. He found it incredible that his daughter had never seen him in a suit on a daily basis.
He came to the realization that his trendy child had no understanding of how socially conditioned ideas affect formal dress codes. However, he recognized that his child simply enjoyed experimenting with new styles, which he believed was the true essence of fashion: a personal expression of freedom. This revelation inspired him to create his “Black Tie” collection, brimming with fresh ideas. As a side note, it’s worth mentioning that Harper Seven Beckham, a 13-year-old, surprised her parents by opting to wear a tailored trouser suit to her mother’s show in Paris.
For several seasons now, Piccioli has been fully committed to dressing and making an impression on today’s youth at Valentino. At the Hotel Salomon Rothschild, he showcased a neo-punk tribe of individuals sporting face jewelry, tattoos, and heavy boots to accentuate the individuality he aimed to highlight in his innovative takes on traditional formal wear.
The season has seen a diverse range of uniform tailored dress codes, and Valentino’s collection is no exception. Piccioli has added his own unique twists to the theme, with the main consistency being the use of proportion, such as lots of leg and mini-length dresses, skirts, shorts, and jumpsuits in black and white, with occasional splashes of Valentino’s signature red.
While Valentino was originally focused on creating a language of femininity that appealed to traditional aristocrats, Hollywood actresses, and socialites, Yves Saint Laurent was the one who first broke the boundaries between women’s and men’s wear with his evening “Smoking” suits in the 1960s. Piccioli acknowledges Valentino’s original vision, but has now shifted the focus towards the idea of a lifestyle community. He aims to provide clothing options that allow individuals to express their personality while still wearing the same clothes as their peers.
Piccioli’s approach is disruptive in one sense, but he still utilizes the wealth of techniques, skills, fabrics, and trimmings that are true to the Valentino brand. He incorporates delicate frill-front blouses, ostrich feathers, sequined minis, 3-D roses, and even a dress made entirely of a lattice-work of red bowties. The collection also features classy, voluminous coats. However, a standout piece that captures the new Valentino spirit is a long, unembellished silk shirt-dress, draped to one side at the hip, in a striking red color that exudes a mysterious blend of flou and cool.
